Background Research into Asena and Gokturk Myths

A long time ago in Central Asia, there was a great war. After the battle, only one young boy survived. He was badly hurt and left alone in the forest.

Just when everything seemed lost, a magical wolf appeared. Her name was Asena. Instead of hurting him, Asena took care of the boy. She brought him to a secret cave, fed him, and healed his wounds. After some time, the boy became strong again.

Together, they had children — and one of their sons became the leader of a great tribe called the Ashina (Aşina) Clan.

This clan later created the Göktürk Empire, one of the first and strongest Turkish states in history. The wolf, Asena, became a powerful symbol for all Turkic people — a sign of hope, strength, and new beginnings.

Legend of Asena

What does the story of Asena mean?

  • Survival – Even after destruction, life can begin again.

  • Protection – Asena helped and guided the boy like a guardian.

  • Nature & Spirit – The wolf is a respected animal in Turkic culture.

  • Female Power – Asena is a strong female figure, not a queen or goddess, but a protector.

Today, many people still remember Asena. She is part of Turkish myths, stories, and art — and she inspires many young artists and writers.
